What I’ve Been Up To

IMG_6569

For those of you wondering if I’ve fallen off the face of the earth, no I haven’t. But some of you may recall my fall backwards over some piles of deck lumber nearly five weeks ago. Well, the injury to my left foot has continued to keep me out of the garden. So I haven’t posted much.

Those of you whose blogs I normally read, please try and understand how sad it’s been not feeling well enough to get outside and work in my sanctuary. So I haven’t been visiting many gardening blogs either. It is just hard to be faced with seeing such beauty when I can’t participate. Yeah, I guess that’s being a bad sport…

However, upon seeing a specialist yesterday, I now have a steel boot that goes up to my knee on my foot, which enables me to get around with less pain. I will have this on for three weeks, and then they will reevaluate.

Because I am virtually indoors most of the time, I am continuing to blog on my decorating/craft blog, http://cozylittlehouse.blogspot.com, because at least I can enjoy still taking photos while inside. So I may not post much on this blog until fall, when, hopefully, I will have the full use of my foot back. I was told it is a difficult injury to heal. But at least I’m not hobbling around leaning on a cane anymore. There is that!

So, to answer those who’ve emailed to ask about me, I do appreciate your kind concern. It meant a lot to me that you cared. Sorry I have been remiss in my gardening endeavors.

  1. Dear Brenda, so sorry to hear how lousy you’ve been feeling. I can relate to the foot problem…my ankle is still swelling up when I walk on it and could take most of the summer to heal enough to ‘take a walk’. UGH. That does not make me very happy, either;-( I try to get out though, and walk around the garden, and I’ve managed to do a few things out there as well as inside. And I work around the house, so I am getting around…but I’m technically supposed to stay off it. The swelling wouldn’t be so bad if I did! I hope you can hurry up and get well so you can enjoy your garden once again! I’m dealing w/Lyme Disease so that’s another bummer. I guess this summer wasn’t meant for ‘fun in the sun’…because I can’t tolerate the sun due to the med’s I have to take. My skin blisters up even with SPF 100…I couldn’t believe it! Well, there are lots of other things worse than missing garden time (uh, at the moment I can’t think of any!)…but, I’ll let you know if I do!

  2. Brenda, I hate that you are in pain! I fell “down” the stairs while going up at my friends house a few weeks ago. My foot is still sore. It’s a tiny thing compared to what you are living with though. Get well!!

About that bright reddish orange dragon fly….they land on my hosta blooms all the time. Last summer I never investigated up close, for the longest time I thought they were flowers or buds. They are back again this summer around the pond. Gorgeous!

  3. I was wondering where you had gotten off to! Well I am glad to know that you are on the mend and the pain is diminished with your new boot. I didn’t realize you HAD another blog! I am going there now. I have missed you.

  4. I miss seeing your beautiful garden but I am enjoying the inside so much over at your other blog. Glad you have a new boot and it’s easier to get around but I sure hope you start feeling better soon. I hope it heals quickly and you are up and running around soon.

  5. Oh- that dragonfly picture is amazing!

  6. Hope you are feeling better soon!

  7. Brenda,
Since I mostly visit your decorating blog, I had almost forgotten about this gardening one. I just assumed you weren’t gardening so much because of the construction going on in your backyard & the hot humid Texas weather. I’m sorry to hear your foot is still giving you fits. I hope the new boot will help you get around better. It’s a royal pain to be gimpy. I know, I’ve done my time on more than one occasion. Getting old is a bitch! Excuse the french. Here’s to you feeling better & getting around better. And the dragonfly photo is amazing. I had to call my son over to take a look as he loves dragonflies. He thought it was amazing too. Take care & I’ll check up with you later on your decorating blog.

  8. Wishing you a speedy recovery Brenda, post and visit when you can, just get yourself all better first. Your dragonfly photo is really stunning :-), Kathy.

  9. That is the most awesome dragonfly photo ever! I love them, I may have to copy that photo and save it for my albums!

  10. Brenda,

I’m so glad they could at least give you something to ease your pain. Just sit in a chair and tell Robert what to do. I wish I could be there to help you.

    Hugs,
    Gretchen

  11. Brenda – what a lovely dragonfly picture.
So sorry that you have the gardening blues – hope that your foot mends well and that you are pain free soon.

  12. Pain can drain a person fast. I am so sorry you
aren’t out in and with your beloved garden and friends… Hopefully by the time you are back to normal, Robert will have worked his magic, the weather will be agreeable and all will be back to gorgous normal.
I hope the boot helps and soon you are up to doing all you love.

    Beth~♥

  14. Brenda! I am so sorry you haven’t been getting around better. I was wondering? It’s so HOT right now your better off inside anyway. Easy for me to say, huh? Hope you got some of that glorious rain earlier this week!
    Hope you feel better SOON!

  15. I understand how you feel. I will be checking on you at your home blog(-: I know its hard to not be able to get outside and do what you love. The main thing is to get plenty of rest and just relax. Besides it is to hot out there anyhow(-:
Email me if you need me(-: I am always here for you! (((hugs)))

  16. Brenda, I’m so sorry you’ll be out of commission for a bit. Try to just chill out and enjoy the break, and be all geared up for Fall.

I’ll enjoy your other blog…didn’t know you had it!!! It looks awesome. You’ll be teaching me a lot, and I really need the help.

  17. Happy Independence Day, Brenda. The garden will be there when you are feeling better. In the meantime, take this opportunity to read and know that you have many people in blogland rooting for a speedy recovery. Feel better, my friend.
    ♥, Susan

  18. Good to hear from you and that you are still getting along. Hang in there! We all love you and miss you.

  19. Sending lots of hugs to you, Brenda. Of course you need this time away from your gardening blog. It’s sort of a rerouting right now. Thank you for your heartfelt and honest post, revealing yourself and being vulnerable. I am in awe. I so rarely can do that– which is why I write my stories. :)

  20. I’m so sorry, Brenda! I had to wear a big boot for months after I broke my ankle. It was nice to get around a little, after being off my feet for so long, even if it was cumbersome!

Your garden still looks nice, though, and you have all those wonderful windows and doors to look out of!

  21. Warm hugs and thoughts surround you, dear Brenda. Dear friends will pick up and rejoice when you are well enough to continue. In the meantime, simply get well.

  22. Here’s to a speedy recovery!

  23. Hello…just stopping by to say hello and for a hug. The last 24 hours has been rough..I have cried and cried like you would not believe. =(

  24. Sorry to hear you have been injured and suffering. Blogging is just one portion of all of our lives and I have missed yours but been equally busy. I hope the steel boot does the trick and you are ready for dancing soon.

  25. Oh Brenda, as usual, I stayed away too long…I’m so sorry about the injury and the pain! How did I miss that you have another blog???? Did I know this???

  26. Get some rest and be well ♥

  27. Brenda, I feel so bad for you. With the 100 + degree heat we have been having, I haven’t been doing much out in the garden either, and it is frustrating. Hope everything works out for you and that you will soon be able to be outside and enjoy your new deck.

  28. Brenda! I’m so sorry to hear you injured yourself. You know you can get a certain vicarious pleasure from visiting other blogs, though. I’m flattered you came to mine. I know just exactly how you feel since I just had the flu and for five days I was incapable of getting farther than the back gate. To walk around the day lily bed was exhausting, the idea of doing anything was quite out of the question.

This probably accounts for the various rants I have been indulging in lately!

By the way, that dragonfly picture is fantastic.

  29. Just checking in to see how you are doing? Hope everything is improving with your health.

  32. What a nasty time to get an injury to keep you out of the garden! Hope it heals up soon

  33. Oh, Brenda, I didn’t know. I’ve been busy with my Mom’s care and the ICU and haven’t made the rounds. I hope the new boot helps your poor foot. Hang in there, and I understand if you don’t want to visit. I did write about books today though and thought of you.~~Dee

  34. Sending hugs your way Brenda. I am so sorry to read about your fall. I hope your recovery is going well. Take care and BFN, G

  35. Thinking of you and missing you tons. Hope you are doing well. *hugs*

  37. Hi Brenda, oh no, what a bummer! I hope you’re feeling better.

I wanted to let you know the hyacinth bean vines I planted from the seeds you sent are budding! I’m so excited, and can hardly wait for the blooms!

  38. Hi Brenda, hope you’re better. Be sure to let me know at Furniture and Design Ideas when you’re going to make a come back.

  39. Hello,

    What a fabulous shot!

  40. Oh man, that’s a bummer! Hope the new solution helps soon.

  41. Brenda, I just realized that I hadn’t heard from you in ages and ran over here to see what’s going on. Girl, your foot injury sounds like some of the things I’ve done! I hope it’s doing better by now. I was out of the garden for 2 months in 2007 due to bunion surgery. Even though I’d planned it for the hottest part of the year, it was tough not even being able to hobble out there!

I paged down and saw your deck pics … it looks great! What I really love is the Yorkie, though! I didn’t realize you had one. Our Nala was the doggie light of our lives for 8-1/2 years and I still miss her.

  42. Brenda, so sorry to hear that your fall incapacitated you so much! I sure understand after having gone through a cast from a broken foot. No fun at all! And I needed a wheelchair because I am unable to use crutches for another poor old body condition.
And today I am headed for the chiropractor for my back and hips.

So, girlfriend, rather than have a “pity party”, why don’t you and I have a tea party and just go visiting some pretty blogs that cheer us up while sipping!

    Get better!
    Diane

  43. Very beautiful dragonfly pic!!

  44. Brenda wishing you a speedy recovery. I know too well how one is limited in activities when foot is injured! I broke my ankle a year ago and reading this post brings me back to those memories of being cooped up..cast and wheelchairs ..quite limiting! Gell well!

  45. Brenda girl !
I am so sorry .. I had no idea what had happened to you .. I just kept thinking you were taking a break .. I wish you a more speedy recovery and feeling more like yourself VERY soon girl !
    Joy : )

  46. A-mazing photo!!!
    what a magical inspiration.

    that moment.
